AJ Reynolds at the Red & Black

FYI …

On Thursday 4/17 AJ Reynolds from the Athens Banner-Herald will be at The Red & Black at 5:30 to give a quick photo talk and then field questions from students about the industry, gear, portfolios or anything else VJ related. After the talk and questions he will critique portfolios. If students do not have a website/online portfolio they should bring between 20-30 images on a flash drive or external hard drive to be critiqued.

Here is a link to his website if you would like to include it on the blog: Ajreynoldsphoto.com

Covering Appalachia

Your classmate Gina Yu sent along a link to a recent piece on the Bitter Southerner titled A Love Letter to Appalachia which reminded her of the work you did in White County.

Worth the time, a different way of portraying the communities.

Chilling Storytelling

This … is freaking amazing.

It’s a Boyd Huppert story out of KARE 11 TV in Minneapolis looking at ice caves that have formed in Bayfield, Wisconsin. And, holy cow, is it gorgeous.

Listen to the sounds in this – this demonstrates the power of great audio.

(Thanks to Al Tompkins at the Poynter Institute for the link.)

Sports Project

So, this is very light on images, but the idea is strong … The Disappearance of Small-town Football was published last fall by the Omaha World-Herald.

Thoughts on it?

Thinking Length

Interesting piece here from Wistia about the length of videos online – and how long people will watch them. Store this info away as you’ll want to draw on it later.

Exit, Sever Right …

A few reminders …

  • The final version of your videos are due on the server by 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 2.
  • All gear is due back in the lab by Friday, May 3, at 5 p.m. Those of you heading on to the next course are exempt from this, of course. Make sure you have everything issued to you – the late fee is $50 per day.
  • Cookout RSVPs need to be in by Thursday at 5 p.m.
  • The server and all machines will be wiped early next week – if you have anything on them you need, get it by the end of this week. There will be no lab access after 5 p.m. on Friday.
  • Thank you notes – if you sent any in to Mr. Harry Hodgson McNeel, Dr. Middleton would like a copy for our files. If you haven’t sent them out to the visiting pros, well … I’ll find out.

That’s it for now.

DigLit: Adobe Premiere

As requested, I’ve built a series of five videos to help you through video editing.

Up first, how to start building your timeline:

Next, we take a look at how to add b-roll and cover shots:

Once you’re through those, start working on editing your audio:

Add graphics and titles:

Lastly, work on your transitions and then export it:

If you want to see these a little bigger, you can click on the YouTube logo in the lower right hand corner when they start playing, which will take you to the YouTube page and then you can run them full screen.

Now you have something to do on Saturday night.
