Kendall’s Story Ideas

1. I would like to follow Leslie Lord, large animal vet at the Royston Animal Hospital, on her weekend farm calls. She said that I would be able to photograph her while working, but because many times the calls are emergency situations, that she would have to review the photos before they are published. Large animal care at the hospital includes equine dentistry, herd health, and “large animal reproduction.” I think that this is an important story since Franklin County relies so heavily on agriculture and, therefore, animals.

2. Evie Secrest and Carol Reynolds are best friends who opened an antique shop together. They decided to take on this adventure after a chapter had closed in Secrest’s life when her husband built a Wright Flyer and they traveled the country in it. They no longer have the plane; it is in the Birmingham Aviation Museum.

3. Chuck Bussey is a farrier, a craftsman who makes horse shoes and fits them on horses, that covers the Franklin County area. Again he is important to a community who relies on their animals.

Love the Leslie Lord story! I’m going to do the saddle makers so this ones yours 🙂

  2. I like the antique shop idea, as long as there’s good light inside for shooting!

  3. Mark E. Johnson says:

The restrictions on the images concern me a bit with Lord, but if you build trust, you’ll be okay. Be aware that most news organizations wouldn’t allow that review as it can cause shield law problems.

The horse shoe maker (a farrier, I believe, is the technical term) has a lot of potential, but only if he’s working the weekend.

  4. Patty says:

Yeah, I feel funny about her asking to see the images of her emergency clients. Either she has a misunderstanding of what we’re doing here, or she thinks animals deserve HIPPA protection. If the farrier is working all weekend, do that.

I like the vet story! But if that doesn’t work out, I’d definitely go with the farrier, if he’s working on the weekend, I think that would be an interesting story.

  6. Erin Smith says:

I really like the Large Animal Vet and horse shoe guy ideas.

  7. Heather Pitts says:

I like your first and third options. I would go with whichever one you believe you will have greater access to and success from. -by success I don’t just mean great pictures, but good everything! that you can make great!

  8. Damien Salas says:

My first choice is the farrier. Second choice is the large animal vet. They sound interconnected in some way, as they both deal with large animals. Maybe try for that angle?

  9. Any chance you have to do anything with a large animal vet is really a great opportunity.
